MV Klickitat Towed to Mexico
On the Seattle/BI run this afternoon, I saw the MV Klickitat, being towed for the final time by tug, down to Mexico. This classic steel electric class ferry was originally built in 1927. It was originally called the MV Stockton.

Non-Commute Day Today
I commute often into work and for nearly six years have commuted every weekday into Seattle from Poulsbo. A twelve hour day isn't out of the question most days...This includes about 2.5 to 3 hours a day of commuting in my POV, the bus, a ferry ride, and a walk into the work.
It's about 8 miles from the Bainbridge Island Terminal to Colman Dock in Seattle. If you do this a couple of hundred days a year, twice a day, you end up with a lot of miles sailed. I am estimating about 24,000 over my commuting time to date. There are people that have been commuting on the ferry systems for 20 or more years. And there are people commuting on ferry runs that are longer or because of home locations have greater distances to travel and thus more time commuting.
So...to help break that up...I have tried to start working remotely one day a week, typically on Wednesdays. It definitely helps with the psyche and let's me see my family sooner and longer than I typically get to do.

Ferry Alerts
There is nothing worse than just missing the ferry...other than being to the ferry terminal on time only to find that the ferry is delayed for some reason. It might be a mechanical issue, police activity, weather issue, or something else. I highly recommend you sign up for a ferry alert, which will send you e-mail warnings of pending delays or other issues related to ferry service. It can save you wasted time waiting for the next ferry to come in.
Riding the Ferry
Hi. I am Darin Hartley and have been commuting on Washington State Ferries for over six years now. There are days that the ferry commute (and related forms of mass transit) rock! There are days when the ferry commute doesn't rock...and there are plenty of days when funny things happen or some unique visitor or happening on the ferry or the surrounding Puget Sound waterways makes it interesting. If you have a funny story or something to share of interest to the greater ferry commuting world, please share it. Hope to hear from you soon and/or see you on the ferry. I typically am on the 6:20 AM from Bainbridge Island to Seattle and the 4:40 PM from Seatte to Bainbridge Island.
